How to Measure Blinds: A Simple Guide for a Perfect Fit

Shopping for new blinds? Before you dive into colors, textures, and materials, there’s one step that makes or breaks the result: getting the right measurements. Whether you're outfitting a cozy bedroom or updating your entire home, measuring your windows accurately is essential for a clean look and proper function. Here's a straightforward guide to help you measure your windows like a pro, no tape-measure anxiety required.

Why Measuring Matters

Blinds that don’t fit just right can let in unwanted light, look sloppy, or even be hard to operate. Getting it right the first time saves time, money, and the hassle of returns or adjustments.
There are two ways to install blinds, inside mount and outside mount, and each requires a slightly different approach when measuring.

Inside Mount Blinds

Inside mount blinds fit snugly within your window frame. This style offers a sleek, built-in appearance that works well for most windows, especially if your frames are deep enough to accommodate the blinds.

How to Measure:

Width: Measure across the top, middle, and bottom inside edge of the window frame. Record the smallest of the three.

Height: Measure from the top inside edge down to the sill in three places—left, center, and right. Again, use the longest measurement.

Depth: Make sure your window has enough depth to accommodate the style of blinds you choose (each product will list a minimum depth requirement).

Tip:always measure to the nearest 1/8 inch—for example, 54 3/8" is more precise than just 54". Our product options allow for those exact measurements, so don’t round!

Outside Mount Blinds

Outside mounts are installed above the window frame or on the wall, extending beyond the window itself. This is a great solution for shallow windows or if you want to block more light.

How to Measure:

Width: Measure the exact area you want to cover. Typically, add 2–3 inches on either side of the window for better light control and coverage.

Height: Start from where you plan to mount the brackets (above the window frame) and measure to where you want the blinds to end, usually slightly below the sill or all the way to the floor for full-length windows.

Reminder: Make sure to check for obstructions like window cranks or trim that could affect your placement.

Bonus Tips for a Smooth Experience

• Use a metal tape measure for the most accurate results.

• Always measure to the nearest 1/8 inch—rounding up or down can throw off the fit.

• Double-check everything. It’s worth the extra minute.
